Carbon Footprint and Cost Modeling Tool for Powder Coatings

At Akzo Nobel

AkzoNobel, a leading multinational in the paints and coatings industry, is dedicated to maintaining its position as a sustainable producer. A significant portion of the carbon footprint in powder coating occurs during the curing phase. To address this, AkzoNobel aimed to create a user-friendly tool that models carbon footprint and cost implications, offering clear, actionable insights with minimal user input to promote sustainable practices.

The project’s initial phase focused on identifying and assessing the key factors influencing energy usage in the powder coating process. AkzoNobel provided relevant product information supplemented by research, client interviews, and consultations with industry experts. These findings were validated in close collaboration with AkzoNobel and its clients, leading to the development of an initial model that highlighted differences in carbon footprint and costs compared to the current market standard.

As the project progressed, the model was refined to better accommodate real-world variables, such as different energy sources and oven types used during curing. This involved on-site visits to plants and further validation through meetings with customers. The model was fine-tuned to deliver more accurate and practical results, ensuring it could seamlessly integrate into AkzoNobel’s work practices.

In the final phase, the model was finalised and developed into an IT tool for easy use by AkzoNobel’s customers. This tool will provide comprehensive insights into CO2 emissions and potential cost savings, supporting AkzoNobel’s sustainability goals and empowering customers to make informed, eco-friendly decisions in their coating processes.
